Meat and Sophie's Game of Thrones Themed Halloween DIY Dog Costumes
It’s that time of year again! October is one of my favorite months of the year. Lou and I officially started dating in October (22nd), seven years ago. We got engaged in October (4th) five years ago and married on October 4th four years ago. Plus, Fall is officially in full swing, with the vibrant warm tones of the trees, the browns and flannels and plaids, boots, cozy sweaters, hot apple cider, apple and pumpkin everything, pumpkin patches, haunted houses, zombie crawls and all of the spooky things in between. I seriously cannot get enough!
If you know me, you know just how much I love my dogs, Meat and Sophie. Lou and I have raised them since they were teenie tiny little round rollie pollie puppies - that’s no exaggeration, their Shar Pei wrinkles were on full display the second they were born. With me being a photographer, they’ve grown up with a camera on them all the time. Ironically, they’ve enjoyed wearing sweaters and different outfits, so it became a fun thing for me to play dress up with them whenever I had a chance. Hey, I don’t have any human kids yet so this has filled that void for the past few years :P It’s turned into an annual thing, between puppy birthday party smash cake shoots to crazy Halloween costumes and over the top Christmas cards. I might have reached complete pyscho dog mom status at this point, but it’s worth it! These photos are something I cherish, and I know Meat and Sophie won’t be around forever. I’ll continue to cherish them as the years go by, and I’ll forever laugh when looking at them because, let’s face it, all of these shoots are absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn’t have it any other way :] There’s never a dull moment in this house, that’s for sure.
So this year for Meat and Sophie’s annual Halloween shoot, we decided on a Game of Thrones theme. Lou and I looooooove GOT, so it just seems fitting. I thought a dragon costume would be easy to find for the dogs (yeah, for once in my life!), but boy was I wrong. I searched stores the second the Halloween stuff came out, I searched all of the likely places online and there wasn’t anything that seemed fitting. So then came the frantic phone call to my mom, asking her if she could whip something up for them in a short timeframe. Fortunately for me, my mom is a freakin wizard and can make anything. We found the most perfect fabric at JoAnn Fabrics and my mom got to work repurposing some old Halloween costumes into dragon costumes. And she freakin nailed it! Her talent never ceases to amaze me. I mean, the wings and the horned headpiece?! #ded because she nailed it. Just look for yourself!
ps. make sure you read this blog in it’s entirety. That’s all I’ll say ;]
As if homemade GOT dragon costumes weren’t enough, I decided that Lou and I had to be a part of these photos this year. Mother of Dragons and King of the North, anyone? Now, you’d be surprised at how hard it is to find legit looking Daenerys Targaryen outfit. I ended up repurposing an old dress that I had for the pleated skirt and then bought a cape jacket, wig and black boots off of Amazon. For the dragon egg, my mom saved the day again. We bought a large plastic egg and she created the dragon scales out of duct tape. Ummm, what?! Told you - straight up wizardry. We found Lou’s cape at Spirit Halloween but ordered his wig off of Amazon and pinned two of my black belts across his chest to make him a little Jon Snow-esque. Ironically, he had this sword at his parents house (wtf, who is he?!). It ended up being perfect though!
