Earthy Gender Neutral Nursery
It feels like I’ve been working on this nursery forever. In reality, I kind of have. A few years go, when I started planning how I’d decorate the spare bedroom, I kept in mind that eventually this space would be turned into the nursery so an easy transition into that was what I planned. Unfortunately, life got in the way and the spare bedroom just became a dumping ground for random household items that didn’t have a proper home. Needless to say, I never got around to finishing it. With only two walls stripped of super old, cigarette smoke ridden wallpaper and glue, I still had a lot of work to do in getting this space baby ready.
Slowly but surely, the walls became clean and painted, the furniture built and finishing touches of decor in place. It’s still a work in progress, as I’m sure I’ll be moving around the wall decor, but it’s finally to a point where I’m proud to call it finished and show it to you guys!
I’m one million percent all about gender neutral colors. I hate that some colors are supposed to be for boys and other colors for girls. I don’t believe that whatsoever and it really makes me cringe. Even before we found out we were having a boy, I knew I wanted to create a tranquil space. I wanted somewhere to step into and instantly feel calm and grounded. This space I’ve created allows me to walk in and feel completely connected to nature and motherhood. I’ll be spending a lot of sleepless nights in this room and I’ll be establishing the most special bond with my son in this room. All of these thoughts ran through my head as I searched for the most perfect furniture and decor.
Like every other room in my house, this room is filled with new items, thrifted items and handmade items. There are pieces from local small businesses and pieces from other small business makers from around the country. Most of the new pieces came from Target, Amazon and TJ Maxx. The dresser is from ReInVintage, a local creator in Cleveland, Ohio. I worked with MIssy to tell her what I envisioned and she turned this old dresser into a stunning piece for this space that is absolutely perfect!
Another special piece in the room is the moon phase garland that was handmade by Westward Notions, another maker in the Youngstown/Northeast Ohio/Pittsburgh area. This piece is special because it was picked out with the thought of my first child in mind. I wanted a way to memorialize that baby and allow that baby to be a part of Atlas’s space in a positive light. My first pregnancy really paved the way for this new life that I carry in my belly, and having a beautiful work of art to remind me of that every time I step in that space is so humbling.
The bookcase in the corner of the room is the very bookcase that I remember sitting in front of at my grandma’s house, pulling out books and flipping through them all. To have a piece from her house and my youth in my son’s nursery, holding the books that he will flip through and learn from makes my heart so full. I wish both of my grandmother’s were here on this earth to meet him, but to have a piece of them connected to this space in some way is very special for me.
Of course, you see the dogs in these photos. I think it’s their favorite room in the house, too! We’ve spent so much time in there already and are looking forward to spending so much more time in there with their little brother :]
